Mal T. Hyett
Position: Shape—Southeast Europe
Committee Member
I am currently
establishing a Conservation and Training Centre, near Sibui,
Romania. This multi-faceted project will cover an area of 1,000 hectares of
land and will include a rare breeds farm, a sanctuary, a rescue and
rehabilitation facility, and a recreation area (a.k.a. zoo, showing only
European species). The main emphasis will be on training for animal welfare in
modern day practices, education, conservation, research, enrichment, nutrition,
etc. for animal care staff and related personnel, as well as the general
public.
I produce a
newsletter for zoo-related personnel now in its 6th year – although
only 3 years in electronic form, which goes out to over 400 individuals
(including 200+ zoological establishments) around the world plus many of the
animal related groups (www.zoolinx-romania.ro).
Most of my working
life has been on a self-employed basis and for many years I owned a successful
animal housing design and building company for domestic livestock and pets. I
have also owned a small holding of some 2 acres with various livestock
including pedigree cattle, goats, and poultry with which even that far back I
used various enrichment techniques with very successful results.
