Chris Hales
Position:
UK-Ireland Facebook Group Coordinator
Hi my name
is Chris, I work as a carnivore keeper at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park where I have
been for the past 12 years. In this time I have worked with a wide range of
taxa, but have spent the majority of my time with carnivores, possibly due to
the mutual love of meat.
Even from my time as a junior keeper all those years ago, I have always carried
out enrichment for the animals I work with. Back then I didn’t really know
about enrichment, I just wanted to encourage my animals to behave naturally. My
passion in this area has never stopped and these days I am very active in
designing, developing and building new goal orientated enrichment devices. I
have also become an instructor, helping to teach enrichment workshops to
students at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park. Over the last couple of years I have
been developing on my facebook
enrichment group, which has proved to be a great success with a lot of
active discussions and great ideas. At the 3rd REEC meeting held at Marwell
Wildlife I was approached by the SHAPE-Regional committee about merging my
enrichment facebook group with the SHAPE—UK-Ireland group which I was very
happy to accept. It is great to be onboard and associated with this SHAPE Regional.
