Shape-Brasil 2nd Regional Conference on Environmental Enrichment

Fulfilling another one of our goals, Shape-Brasil held a marking event in 2010: the 2nd Regional Conference on Environmental Enrichment.

The event occurred from October 22nd to the 24th at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry at the Universidade de So Paulo, in a partnership with this School and the Aqurio de So Paulo. With 158 participants, the Conference counted with the presentation of 24 scientific posters and 13 oral presentations, which had Brazilians (from So Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Paran, Pernambuco e Distrito Federal) and foreigners (from Argentina, Colombia, United Kingdom and France).

In the attempt to show the scientific community the relevance of environmental enrichment for aquatic animals, the grand opening of the Conference was held in great style at the Aqurio de So Paulo.  At the opening night, through a nocturnal visit, the Aqurio de So Paulo provided all participants with a real time demonstration of different kinds of enrichment for fishes, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals.

Well-being is a lot more than being well: involved in this theme, our national and international speakers showed their professional experiences and inspired participants with the will to search for new achievements.

Kathy Carlstead (Honolulu, HI - USA): Keeper-Animal relationships – how relationships with keepers affect animal welfare, and why keeper-animal relationships need to be studied in zoo and lab animals, and what this means for enrichment and training and Animal welfare and the importance of enrichment in zoos.

Robynn Ingle-Moller (South Africa):  How enrichment can be used for professional development.

Round table: Is animal conditioning environmental enrichment? - Valerie Hare (San Diego, CA - USA) and Vanessa T. Kanaan (Santa Catarina - Brazil).

Daniela Ramos (So Paulo – Brazil); Environmental enrichment for pets: relevance for prevention and control of behavioral problems.

Vera Lucia Lngaro Amaral (Santa Catarina - Brazil); Lab animals: We want to be enriched too.

Cristiane Schilbach Pizzutto (So Paulo - Brazil);  Environmental enrichment for fish and aquatic mammals

Manuela Gonalves Fraga Geronymo Sgai (So Paulo - Brazil); Shape-Brasil: activities, goals and future prospects.

One of the Conferences news that was among the highest rated by the participants was the simultaneous translation, which provided higher understanding of the themes addressed by the international speakers. The oral presentations were also well received and allowed the exhibition of the papers to all participants.

The evaluations made by the participants showed great understanding of the addressed themes and high expectations for the next event in 2012.

Were counting on your participation.
