As a landscape architect and zoo planner I
consider enrichment an integrated part of zoo design from masterplanning to
growing suitable browse. The Shape of Enrichment has always been a source of
inspiration for me and I am happy to spread the word and to contribute to
improving holding conditions for wild animals in captivity.
In 2000 I founded the ZooLex Zoo Design
Organization and have managed it ever since. Valerie Hare and the Shape of Enrichment
have been my role models for developing ZooLex which is the only scientific
website on zoo design. The ZooLex website is maintained by zoo related
volunteers with various background from all over the world. In 2006 ZooLex
became a service of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
I hold a degree (Diplomingenieur) in landscape
ecology and landscape planning from Vienna University of Natural Resources and
Applied Life Sciences and a master degree in landscape architecture from
University of Georgia, School of Environmental Design. During my studies I
specialized in zoo design which resulted in the book "Evaluating Zoo
Design - The Importance of Visitor Studies" and the ZooLex website.
